Feature Article: When Life Has Other Plans
Whenever I write about myself, my Intention, Mission, Purpose, is for you, should you so choose, to look at the same or similar themes that may be playing out in your life. Then I invite you to take the time for inner reflection and inspired action.
I believe it was one of the Beatles who said, "Life is what happens when you are making other plans."
Last weekend was very intense.
My husband and I attended my niece's wedding (on the mainland; we're Islanders). As expected it was a joyful event with laughter, lightheartedness and wonderful reconnections with relatives I hadn't seen in years.
The day after the wedding I spent with my son, Mike. Like many others in the current economic situation, he suddenly lost his job of eleven years. Now, 8 months later, he is still not working.
But this isn't just a case of find another position and carry on with the previous routines and lifestyle.
It's a time for soul-searching.
Mike is really clear that he no longer is willing to make a long commute and be part of the 9 to 5 scene. But he isn't clear on what he does want. Plus his wife is dealing with her fears.
I'm choosing to spend more time being supportive (and using my coaching skills) as they come through this major change in their lives.
It brings back memories of my own experience in 1993 when I left a career that was too stressful. Out of that experience came my 7-week eCoaching Program at http://www.StartingLifeOver.com
One of the most helpful thing I heard during that bleak time was my sister, Gwen, saying, "Bev, what you're experiencing is a spiritual crisis."
Gwen has spent many years caring for her paraplegic husband, Leo, age 71, who was in chronic pain. When she returned from the wedding the police were there to inform her that her husband had taken his own life.
He had left a loving note. At first Gwen was angry and when she was calmer was thankful knowing that it was an act of love and took a great deal of courage and effort for him to carry it out (attaching a hose to the exhaust and then getting from his wheelchair into the car unaided).
Leo, in his youth, had drilled wells. He'd often said he'd like to drill a well in Africa. One will now be drilled in his memory. His daughter and son-in-law spent five years in Zambia and will be returning next year.
I am choosing to spend more time with Gwen.
Another consideration: Last November I wrote about being "chronologically enhanced" turning 70. http://www.theimpjournal.com/archives/issue-68.htm My husband of 5 years, my wonderful dance partner, Wray, is 82 with a deteriorating memory.
I am choosing to spend more time with Wray.
(I'm in tears while writing this.)
I feel the need to make significant changes in my own life - it's time to re-assess what I'm doing and go with 'want to' rather than 'should'. I'm choosing to spend each day doing what my heart desires. Loving more. Playing more. Spending time with family.
So now you know why I'm letting go of producing this newsletter on a regular basis. Expect occasional issues.
I invite you to re-read issues from the archives. Issue #1 was written in January 2003. There's a lot of living and learning reflected in 76 issues! http://www.theimpjournal.com/archives/
Yes, it's time for an Interlude for Mentoring and Play.
I repeat what I stated at the beginning: Whenever I write about myself, my Intention, Mission, Purpose, is for you, should you so choose, to look at the same or similar themes that may be playing out in your life. And then inviting you to take the time for inner reflection and inspired action. Namaste.
