1. Feature Article: Your Incredible Mind Power
Blowing up a balloon and then deflating it is a simple way of demonstrating Oliver Wendall Holmes quote, "The human mind once stretched by a new idea, never goes back to its original dimensions."
Now imagine blowing up a balloon again. Keep on blowing! How big can it get until it pops? We don’t know what is impossible until we stretch the limits of what is possible.
What holds us back from using our Incredible Mind Power?
Before answering that question, let me tell you that several times my brother, who has worked in the computer field for years, has asked me why I haven’t used certain features on my computer. My reply was, "David, I didn’t know it had those capabilities!"
Most of us don't know that we have incredible mental capabilities!
Perhaps you have had the experience in school of feeling dumb or chose to play dumb to be more popular. If you don't think you are smart, why would you even believe that you have Incredible Mind Power? Using your mind in the ways I'm talking about has nothing to do with I.Q.
Now you might be thinking, "How is this important to me?"
Why would you even want to use your Incredible Mind Power? Quite simply, the choices you make and the way you think create your reality.
Use your Incredible Mind Power to create a happier, healthier, wealthier you who is more fulfilled in all areas of your life!
The Imp is eager to chime in here, "The 3 things Bev will share with you now are just 'opening the door of greater awareness' a crack. You might just peek beyond, or slowly open the door wider and explore or fling the door wide open and embrace the possibilities! The choice is yours!"
Be aware of your feelings, emotional response, what you experience in your body, in response to the activities suggested here. Your body is sharing IMPortant clues about your beliefs about yourself. You can learn so much from them.
When my son Mike was in the primary grades, he came home one day with a drawing he'd done with the following words printed in the typical young child's style, "If you think you can, you can; If you think you can't, you can't." If I still had that drawing I would frame it!
I encourage you to play with the words, "I can’t!"
Stop reading right now and make a list as quickly as you can. Examples: I can't get up and speak in front of a group, I’d die!! I can't swim. I can't dance. I can't because I’m too old.
Have you made your list? Doing it before reading further will be more effective!
But what are you really saying when you say I can’t? You are really saying I WON’T! I won't because I'm afraid. I won't because I lack the confidence. I won't because I'd make a fool of myself. EACH STATEMENT COMES DOWN TO A BELIEF ABOUT YOURSELF!
Now look at the statements you wrote and replace the words, "I can’t" with "I won’t" and add "because...". How is that different? You are always making choices!
When you catch yourself saying, "I can’t", STOP! Ask yourself, "Why won't I?"
If you wish to get past the fear, learn the Emotional Freedom Technique. Find out about it at http://www.emofree.com
Sometimes we say, "I can't" when we really want to but don’t know how. Get in the habit of asking, "HOW can I?"
When you are determined to find a way, you will!
When I wanted to go back to University to get my Masters Degree, I first was thinking, "I can’t because I don’t have enough money". My salary in a Social Service Agency job was low and I had a mortgage to pay. When I was determined to find a way, I starting brainstorming, "How can I?" It dawned on me that my home had increased in value considerably since I bought it. I remortgaged my house! (Then quit my job.) A friend came to live with me for six months and shared expenses. Plus the perfect part-time job practically fell into my lap!
Second strategy.
Have you ever been working and your mind is worrying about a problem at home? Or have you ever been relaxing, having a good time and suddenly a job-related concern pops into your mind and doesn’t go away? When that happens, you are 'contaminating' time. In the theme, 'Indulge in Many Pleasures' in "The Imp Journal", I suggest setting an imaginary alarm clock in your head. Do you need to take a break before refocusing? The Imp says, "Hocus, pocus it’s all about focus!"
When you are aware of contaminating time, you will do it less often. Use your Incredible Mind Power to reclaim time! Ask yourself, "What is the best use of my time right now?" I read about 'contamination of time' from the book, "Time Management for Unmanageable People" by Dr. Ann McGee-Cooper and Duane Trammell.
Third strategy:
I bet right now, you can think of something you 'should' be doing. In fact, you may have a long list of shoulds! Take the time now before reading further to make a list: I should... I should... I should...
Ask yourself a couple of questions, "Do these 'glow' for me or do they 'goad' me?" "What are the consequences of dropping any of my shoulds?"
What shoulds will you drop?
Now, how about a list of what EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD be doing! My spouse should... My boss should... My kids should... So and so should...
Be really aware at this point how you are feeling!
Byron Katie in her book, "Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life" states, "In reality, there is no such thing as a 'should' or 'shouldn't'. There are only thoughts that we impose on reality." She asks, "Where would you be without your should or your shouldn't?"
Go back and have a look at your lists.
If this resonates with you, especially if you are experiencing a lot of grief or turmoil around certain people or situations, check out Byron Katie's website: http://www.thework.org
Summary: Three simple strategies that can start you on the road to using more, much more of your Incredible Mind Power. 1. Catch yourself saying, "I can’t" and change it to "I won’t because...", and questioning why, or "How can I?" 2. Decontaminate time by being aware of when you lose focus and deciding what to do about it. 3. Stop 'shoulding' on yourself!

2. Member Profile:
Introducing Debbie S., Member Profile:
I recently moved to Florida. While looking for a job I'm also trying to navigate and research and learn in order to follow my heart and create a new life. Before, I never allowed myself to know me, never honored myself by suppressing my own feelings and what would be best for me, always doing what was best for others. I now realize it was what it was. Its "building me for greatness".
Interests: photography, beading, scrapbooking, camping, hiking, canoeing.
Motivation: The motivation came when I realized I was making and allowing life to be much harder than it had to be. There had to be more to life than the heartache and isolation I was experiencing. Now, each day I focus on not only being loving and gentle with myself, but also with others. I'm experiencing how every minute of every day I'm surrounded by miracles.
Passion: I want to make a difference in other people's lives. My entire life has been influenced with abuse, divorce, drugs, alcohol - either personally or indirectly through family members. It's my dream to be able to help others in the areas of loss and grief and also drug/alcohol abuse with the support needed to re- build lives after such devastation.
I applied to volunteer at a women's crisis center and am just starting their training.
As for now ~ I keep on living and learning, loving and sharing... Blessings ~ Debbie.
